Overview

The FAD1110 Evaluation Board (FAD1110EVB) is a compact, ready to use evaluation platform designed to demonstrate the functionality and performance of the FAD1110 automotive ignition gate driver IC in realistic ignition coil applications.

The board integrates the FAD1110 device together with an ignition IGBT and all essential application circuitry, providing a complete solution for evaluating coil charging behavior, programmable dwell time control, current limiting via the VSENSE input, and the device’s timing based protection features. This enables fast and efficient validation of ignition driver operation without the need for additional external hardware.

The FAD1110EVB allows detailed observation of the device’s differential input stage, which includes built in spike filtering and ground shift tolerance, ensuring robust triggering in harsh automotive electrical environments. The evaluation board also demonstrates the Hard Shut Down (HSD) mechanism, which immediately disables the ignition IGBT when the programmed maximum dwell time is exceeded, protecting the system from thermal overload and unintended spark events.

Special attention has been given to safe handling of ignition level voltage transients. The PCB layout incorporates enhanced creepage and clearance spacing in accordance with IPC 2221A guidelines, and critical signals such as the differential inputs, OUTPUT gate drive, VSENSE current limit node, and CSSD timing pin are accessible via clearly labeled connectors and oscilloscope test points.

The FAD1110EVB supports evaluation with a wide range of ignition coils or equivalent inductive loads and is suitable for both bench level characterization and system level testing. In addition to functional evaluation, the board serves as a reference design to support customer implementation of the FAD1110 ignition gate driver in production automotive ignition systems.
