Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEVs) bridge the gap between traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and full electrification, offering reduced emissions and better fuel efficiency, without the need for external charging. At the heart of MHEVs are 48 V Belt Starter Generators (BSG) and Integrated Starter Generators (ISG), which provide start-stop capability, electric drive, boost, energy recovery and regenerative braking. These vehicles operate with dual batteries: a 48 V Li-ion battery powering the inverter stage, while a 12 V battery supports legacy vehicle electronics and auxiliary loads.
onsemi’s best-in-class Automotive Power Modules (APMs), advanced MOSFETs and robust gate drivers enable scalable BSG and ISG designs from 5 kW up to 25+ kW, adaptable to various powertrain positions (P0–P4) for optimal performance and flexibility. Our APMs, such as the APM17 dual half-bridge module and APM19 3-phase MOSFET bridge, deliver high current handling, low stray inductance and easy integration for efficient inverter and motor control. These modules feature integrated temperature sensing, precision shunt resistors for current monitoring and advanced snubber circuits for EMI reduction. Complementing these are robust gate drivers with desaturation protection and fault reporting, ensuring safe and responsive motor operation.
The onsemi product portfolio also includes in-vehicle networking (LIN, CAN, 10BASE-T1S), analog signal chain components, current sense amplifiers, comparators, LDOs, power supply ICs, enabling seamless integration and communication across the vehicle’s electrical architecture. With onsemi’s comprehensive solutions, automotive designers can achieve best-in-class power density, efficiency, and reliability for MHEV systems.
