48 V - 12 V DC-DC converter modules provide power flow between the medium and low voltage power nets on electric vehicles (EVs). The end-user does not notice these modules, but they provide essential functionality, as EVs do not have a traditional 12 V power net alternator. Instead, EVs have a HV - LV converter from HV battery pack or a 48 V starter generator in case of mild hybrids.
The DC - DC converter module can be bidirectional, allowing power flow in either direction for specific use cases. Power levels from 1 kW to 3 kW are common, with systems requiring components rated at 40 V on the 12 V power net and 80 V or more on the 48 V power net of the converter. onsemi discrete MOSFETs and Automotive Power Modules (APM) allow designers to scale their solutions while providing maximum power density and high reliability for DC-DC converter modules used in EVs and hybrids.
